Florida State Designer of the Year 2006

1. ELIGIBILITY: Contestants must either be a member or be a representative of a member business of FSFA.

2. The contest will be held in conjunction with the annual convention each year. Each contestant will be expected to be present one-half hour before the posted time of the competition to receive instructions and the materials related to the competition.

3. Each contestant will be provided with a “tool box list. This list may change from year to year as determined by the competition committee. No contestant will be allowed the use of any materials not included in the list. Any contestant who uses any material not on the list, will not be scored by the judges.

4. Each designer is provided with all fresh product and any hard goods that are deemed necessary by the committee. Every designer will receive the identical product in identical product in identical quantities, the use of the material will be at the discretion of each contestant. These materials may not be traded between or shared by the contestants.

5. The contest will be two and one-half hours in length, which includes clean up. Each contestant will clean his or her respective station and the surrounding floor. Failure to do so will result in disqualification. Each designer will be assigned an individual number that will identify his or her designs.

6. Each designer will complete the 3 floral compositions announced during the instruction period. The committee will determine the nature of each design to class=grame>be completed by the designers.

7. As each designer completes their designs they will attach a description of each design using proper floral terminology as defined by the “AIFD Book of Floral Terminology”.

8. When each designer is finished with their work and have completed their clean up, they will then place their card with their individual number on the work station face down and immediately exit the room.

9. Only the committee chair will have access to the list of names and numbers of the contestants.

10. Each judges will be selected by the chair based on their credentials. Only qualified evaluators will be chosen. The judges are not permitted access until the room has been vacated by all contestants and by all committee helpers. A second set of tabulators will be brought in with the judges to tally the score sheets. The score sheets will be collected by the chair of the committee and the winners identified, and announced at the FSFA Annual Awards Banquet. Each design by each contestant will be scored on the following categories with their respective maximum possible points: Interpretation (10), Creativity (10), Scale (10), Unity (10), Balance (10), Focal Emphases (10), Line (10), Depth (10), Color (10), and Texture (10). There is a possible total of 100 points.

11. The Prizes are as follows:

Winner - $300.00, the traveling trophy, and a personal trophy.

First runner-up - $125.00 and a plaque.

Second runner-up - $75.00 and a plaque.

12. The winner will also be required to represent FSFA at the Southern Retail Florist’s Association Designer of the Year (D.O.Y.) Competition and shall receive reimbursement of economy airfare (or the equivalent) and hotel room rates as determined by the Southern Retail schedule requirements. In order for the winner to represent FSFA at Southern Retail, the winner must be actively employed by a FSFA member shop or a FSFA individual member. If the winner is unable to fulfill their responsibilities as D.O.Y. then the first runner up will step up.

13. The winner must also present an education program at the following Mid – Season Conference. This will be a paid program and the winner will be paid the same rate as the FSFA Education Committee’s payment schedule for designers.

Florida State Master Designer (FSMD) Competition 2006

9:30 a.m., June 10th, 2006

1. This competition is intended as an interpretive competition for accredited “FSMD” designers. Each year the committee chooses the theme that the designers will interpret. There will be only one winner. The Competition will be held in conjunction with the annual convention.

2. ELIGIBILITY:
Contestants must either be a member or be a representative of a member business of FSFA and accredited as FSMD.

3. After the contestant pays the entry fee he/she will receive in advance of the competition a copy of the rules and a sample score sheet.

4. All designs must be contained on the 60” round table top provided by FSFA.

5. The contestants shall have 1½ hour for prep work, design, and cleanup.

6. All work must be put together on-site. Preparation of props in advance, however; all floral material whether fresh, silk, or dried (including plant materials) must be completed on-site during the predetermined time slot. A commentator will speak to each design providing education to viewers, while the designer is assembling and will not ask any questions of the designer, until the work is complete.

7. Each designer must provide all materials, props, tools, linen, supplies, and a speak sheet for their composition. FSFA will only provide the space and 60” table.

8. No trading, sharing, or borrowing material will be allowed. Doing so will cause disqualification.

9. The use of power is not allowed. If a water feature is constructed, there will be a disqualification if a leak occurs and the resulting damages are the responsibility of the contestant.

10. Each design will be judged by 3 or more accredited designers. Each judge will be assigned and identified by a number. Judges will not be allowed access during the competition. Designs will be scored on the following categories with their respective maximum possible points: Interpretation (10), Creativity (10), Scale (10), Unity (10), Balance (10), Focal Emphases (10), Line (10), Depth (10), Color (10), and Texture (10).

11. In the event less than three contestants enter the competition, it will not take place. All other contestants will be notified immediately. Should a registered contestant not show at the time of the competition causing less than three contestants, the remaining contestants continue the competition. The pieces will be scored, and the prize awarded, unless, circumstances show reason not to award (Determined by joint resolution of the executive board and the committee.)

12. $1,000 and a trophy sponsored by FTD, Inc. presented at the awards banquet.

1. ELIGIBILITY: Contestant must be a member of FSFA. By definition, this does NOT include being a member of a local Association that is a member of FSFA).

2. Each designer will interpret the same theme as chosen by the Competition Committee.  The artwork to interpret will be displayed at the competition site.  If music is used, it will be played at the competition site and all contestants will use the same rendition by the same artist as designated by the Competition committee.

3.  An area, 4 X 4 foot floor space will be allotted to each contestant for their design.  Height will be restricted to 10 feet, any design including electric (but not including extension cords), exceeding space limitations will be disqualified.

4.  If designer opts to use water in the design and container begins to leak before, during or after judging, the design will be disqualified.  If judging has been completed, judge will be reassembled to observe and the design will be pulled from the ranking.

5.  A detailed, typed explanation on one side of an 8 1/2X 11" sheet of paper containing the designer's thoughts behind their interpretation will be required. REMEMBER: This is the ONLY link between your reasoning for your interpretation of the theme and the judges.

6.  Fresh flowers, greens and plant materials should predominate in the design.  Props and accessories of a permanent nature are allowed but should be SECONDARY to the fresh floral product.

7.  FSFA does not assume any liability or responsibility for any props damaged or missing.
